Engine problems can cause major damage that can be expensive to repair, which is why drivers are always advised to seek service if the check engine light turns on. However, the check engine light isn’t the only sign you should pay attention to. Learn more about the engine issues that can be corrected at your Ford dealer.

1. Weak Performance

If your engine feels sluggish or the overall performance of your car is lackluster, this could be because there are issues in the combustion process of your engine. Your engine is designed to convert gasoline fuel into power through the combustion cycle, but when this cycle is interrupted by damaged or out-of-synch engine parts, your vehicle might have weaker performance.

2. Poor Fuel Economy

If you notice you have to fill up at the pump more frequently, damage to your engine could be the cause. It can be hard to pinpoint the precise cause of poor fuel economy without a full diagnostic test from a certified Ford mechanic at your local dealership. High fuel consumption can be caused by a leak in the fuel line or other engine issues.

3. Overheating

An overheating engine is a huge problem. When your engine gets too hot, it can warp or bend parts of the engine, such as the cylinders or pistons. An overheating engine can sometimes cause excessive exhaust smoke, poor performance, and damage to other parts under the hood of your car, like your radiator or transmission.

Fixing a consistently overheating engine isn’t something that can be done at home. While you may be able to apply a Band-Aid to the problem by topping up coolant when the engine overheats, you will continue to experience this issue until a mechanic makes the appropriate repairs. If you have to add coolant to your vehicle when it overheats, make sure you wait at least 15 minutes before popping the hood, so you don’t injure yourself.

4. Stalling

A stalling engine can be frustrating since you have to quickly turn on your car again when it is idling. On top of being dangerous while you are driving, a stalling engine is also a sign of imminent engine failure. Sometimes, the root cause of a stalling engine is an issue with the fuel delivery system, while other times, faulty wires, spark plugs, or ignition coils are to blame.

5. Loud Noises

A healthy engine purrs like a kitten, so if your engine suddenly sounds abnormally loud, you might have a problem. Loud engine noises are often associated with burning pockets of air and fuel, which can lead to major damage to the engine over time.

If the check engine light turns on, or if you notice other unusual symptoms, you should schedule service at your dealership as soon as possible. Reach out to Joe Mahan Ford to schedule your next service appointment today.
